Creating spaces for people and with respect for the natural environment

The practice

A forward-thinking landscape architecture practice in Adlington, Lancashire.

At DAC, we design thoughtful, imaginative places that belong to their surroundings. Whether a site is urban or rural, we start with what’s already there, working with its character, landscape and natural qualities to shape the design.

Every project begins with getting to know the site: the planting, levels, boundaries, materials and the small details that give it a sense of place. From there, we create spaces that feel natural and considered, and are genuinely enjoyable to spend time in.

About the studio

Every scheme is argued on paper first.

We spend time working out how a place will feel before anything is built; its levels, key views, planting, materials and the way people will move through it. Drawing gives us a chance to test ideas, work with the constraints of the site and find the things that make a space worth walking into.

How we work

From first site visit to completion.

Landscape design takes time. It evolves through a process of understanding, testing and refinement, responding to the changing needs of a project and the character of its place. We work through six stages, from the initial concept through to detailed design and delivery, creating landscapes that are designed to establish, mature and grow into their setting over time. We can join a project at any stage, providing the appropriate level of support as it develops.

01

Site Inception

We start with a site visit, taking time to understand the vegetation, levels, boundaries and constraints that will shape the design.

02

Concept

We develop the initial concept, establish a baseline alongside biodiversity net gain requirements, and prepare a high-level cost plan for the landscape works.

03

Landscape and Visual Assessment

Depending on the scale and nature of the project, we prepare Landscape and Visual Appraisals or full Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments, with engagement of statutory consultees where required.

04

Planning

We prepare the drawings and documents needed for planning, including masterplans, general arrangements, detailed planting plans, sections, design statements and 3D visuals.

05

Technical

We develop the design in detail, including hard landscape, landscape details, play areas and NBS specifications, all prepared to the relevant British Standards for tender.

06

Site Monitoring

We stay involved through construction, carrying out inspections at key stages, reviewing setting out, RFIs and subcontractor drawings, and supporting the project through handover and the final defects inspection.
